Before you can use the AI-School Desktop application, you must first install the required software.

Prerequisites

The desktop application requires two additional software components:

Node.js

Node.js is required to run MCP servers and certain features of the desktop application.

1. Go to nodejs.org
2. Download the LTS (Long Term Support) version
3. Run the installer and follow the steps
4. Verify the installation via terminal:

   node --version
   npm --version

Ollama

Ollama is required if you want to use local AI models in the desktop application.

1. Go to ollama.com/download
2. Download the version for your operating system
3. Run the installer
4. After installation, Ollama runs automatically in the background
5. You can install models via terminal:

   ollama pull qwen3-vl:4b

Optional

Ollama is optional if you don't want to use local AI models. You can use the desktop application without Ollama.

Installation instructions

Windows

1. Download the .exe installer file
2. Double-click to start the installer
3. Follow the installation wizard
4. Launch the application from the Start menu

Windows SmartScreen

If Windows SmartScreen displays a warning, click "More info" and then "Run anyway". The application is safe but not digitally signed yet.

macOS

1. Download the .dmg file
2. Double-click to open the disk image
3. Drag the application to your Applications folder
4. Launch the application from Applications

macOS Gatekeeper

When first opening, macOS may warn that the app is from an unknown developer. Go to System Settings → Privacy and Security and click "Open anyway".

Linux

AppImage (recommended)

# Download and make executable
chmod +x AI-School-Desktop_*_amd64.AppImage

# Run
./AI-School-Desktop_*_amd64.AppImage

Debian/Ubuntu (.deb)

# Install
sudo dpkg -i AI-School-Desktop_*_amd64.deb

# Resolve dependencies if needed
sudo apt-get install -f

Version information

The current version of the desktop application is 1.0.0.

New versions are automatically made available via the download links above.
