SLO Search

The SLO Search tool (slo_search) enables the AI to search the Dutch curriculum database of SLO (Stichting Leerplan Ontwikkeling — the National Institute for Curriculum Development). This is ideal for teachers who want to quickly look up core objectives, subject cores, or learning goals for a specific subject and level.

How It Works​

When you ask for learning objectives or core objectives, the AI searches the SLO database semantically. You can search in plain language — the way a teacher would — without needing formal jargon. The tool returns the most relevant core objectives and subject cores, including subject, level, and official description.

This tool is disabled by default. An administrator can enable it in the admin panel.

What is SLO?​

SLO (Stichting Leerplan Ontwikkeling) is the national expertise centre for curriculum development in the Netherlands. SLO:

  • Develops core objectives and attainment targets for all education levels
  • Provides subject cores for all school subjects
  • Supports schools in designing their curriculum
  • Works on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science

Searching​

The tool searches semantically based on your query. You can search by:

  • Subject: Mathematics, Dutch, English, world orientation, etc.
  • Level: Primary (groups 1–8), secondary (VO), MBO
  • Topic: Free-text search in plain language

The AI automatically selects the most relevant results (default 8, maximum 20).

Results​

Each result includes:

  • Title: Name of the core objective or subject core (including code if applicable)
  • Subject: The subject area
  • Level: The education levels the objective applies to
  • Official description: The exact text of the core objective or subject core
  • Explanation: Additional context for the objective
  • Type: Core objective or subject core

Applications for Teachers​

  • Link lesson preparation to official core objectives
  • Formulate learning goals based on the national curriculum
  • Align differentiation materials with the appropriate level
  • Underpin curriculum development with official objectives
  • Prepare for school inspections by cross-checking against core objectives

Limitations​

  • Dutch curriculum (SLO) only
  • Search results are based on semantic similarity, not exact word matching
  • Searching by specific code numbers works less well than searching by content
